This weekend sees a little bit of 40 Watt Club, Athens GA coming to The Harlequin Theatre, Northwich Cheshire. Tribute band Stipe are playing a hometown gig. Tickets sold out weeks ago  and I’m going with my mate Tom a.k.a Daysleeper.

Last weekend over a few drinks Tom and I talked about the passion we have for the band and discussed what songs we’d most like to hear Stipe play. Trying to narrow it down to 20 songs each was like pushing an elephant up the stairs so we ended up with 32 songs each.

My fellow wizard Kicker also loves a bit of listmaking so I got him involved as well.

We’re gonna DJ with these.

It has been said that we wizards are the ones who put the anal into analysis so we won’t go into too much detail on what the results of this survey show but here are a few headlines:

  • Tom’s highest scoring album is Automatic for the People with 6 songs.
  • Kicker has chosen 6 songs each from Murmur, Document and Life’s Rich Pageant.
  • My highest scoring album is Green with 5 songs.
  • The first time I saw R.E.M. live was on the Monster tour but despite that I’ve ended up with no songs from that album on my list.
  • Every single song on Kicker’s list was released in the 1980s.
  • Only 1 song on my list was released after 1999’s Up. That song is Leaving New York though and I think that’s R.E.M.’s most under-rated song.
  • Some well-known singles didn’t get chosen by any of us (e.g. Radio Song, Drive, E-Bow the Letter)
  • There’s a total of 66 different songs chosen there. If Stipe were going to play all those on Saturday, you’d definitely want to bring a flask.

Let us know what you think of our selections. Vote in our poll to tell us which of those is your favourite of the 5 songs that were chosen by all 3 of us.

Stipe are playing loads of gigs all over the UK in 2019, tour dates right here.

Meanwhile remind yourself of just how brilliant R.E.M. were with this playlist of all the songs we’ve chosen.
